What are EU Health Claims?

Nutritional health supplements can provide important puzzle pieces for our health. So why not declare the health benefits of certain ingredients on your product?
Statements such as “contributes to a normal energy-yielding metabolism” or “contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue” can help consumers to better understand the product and to recognize the area of ​​application more quickly.

Such nutritional or health-related statements on food or dietary supplements are referred to as health claims.
Using health claims makes sense as they can reinforce and support a product’s message and purpose.

When and which health claims may be used?

Certain minimum amounts of a nutrient must be contained in the product in order to be able to advertise it with a health claim.
The EU regulation 1924/2006 on nutritional and health claims on food regulates which health claims may be used. According to this, only those statements that are on the EU list may be used.

For example, for the statement “Calcium contributes to a normal energy-yielding metabolism“, at least 15% of the national reference value (NRV) must be contained in a daily portion of the product. For calcium, that would be 120 mg.

All approved health claims can be found in EU Regulation No. 432/2012.
